Open instruments & methods

First generation cyborg, and proud of it.

Physiological measurement mostly happens inside institutions, on equipment most people will never touch. We think the people augmenting, instrumenting and measuring their own bodies are doing real work — and some of what this lab makes will be released openly, for them.

01Repositories Open licence, reproducible

Nothing published yet

There are no public repositories at this time. When there are, they will be listed here with their licence and their stage, and they will contain enough detail for someone else to build or reproduce the thing.

An empty repository published for the appearance of activity is worse than no repository. This section stays empty until there is something in it worth cloning.

No GitHub organisation exists yet

02Why this is slower than you would like Stated so contributors are not left guessing

Open release and patent protection are in genuine tension

Publishing a repository is a public disclosure. For anything the lab may want to protect, releasing first forfeits that option permanently in most jurisdictions — so open release has to be a decision made per project, before the work starts, rather than a default applied at the end.

The lab's position: work intended for open release is separated from work intended for protection at the outset, and neither is quietly converted into the other later. What is released openly stays released. What is held is stated as held, on Work, without describing it.

This is the honest version of a tension that a lot of labs handle by simply not mentioning it.

03Contributor pool Standing, not a job posting

We are looking for people who measure their own bodies

Physiologists, sensing and embedded engineers, signal people, and the biohacking, transhumanist and cyborg community that has been building physiological instruments outside institutions for years — often better and faster than the institutions do.

This lab is run by someone who counts himself part of that first generation rather than an observer of it. That is a position, not a marketing line, and it is why open release is a stated commitment here rather than an afterthought.

There is no open role. This is a standing pool, and it is the first place the lab looks when something opens or when a project needs a hand.
